Havana is a city where time has stood still. In the Cuban capital one can see seductive beauty combined with an almost shabby atmosphere, dilapidated even, of spectacular decay. But decay is nowhere so beautiful as in Havana.
Once that was different. In the thirties, until the fifties Havana was the Las Vegas of the Carribbean, the playground of the rich Americans, gangsters and stars alike. Numerous luxury hotels, casinos and nightclubs were constructed and activities such as grand prix car racing, theatre and musical shows where part of daily life, as well as gambling and corruption.
Until in 1959, Fidel Castro, fed up with decadence, put an end to the regime of President Battista. He brought socialism to Cuba which to this day still defines the lives of Cubans.
The many vintage American cars are one of the few remainders of that glorious period. If they are not on the side of the road because of the expensive gasoline, they drive puffing between horse carriages and bicycles.
Marked by its past and one of the worst economic descents of modern times, life has gotten harder for the average Cuban since the 1950s. Still, Habaneros reflect an infectious energy, passion and joy. Notwithstanding the tough life under the totalitarian government, they carry on regardless, with an almost phlegmatic attitude towards the problems of everyday life.
Havana is province, capital city of Cuba and the biggest and most populous city in the Caribbean. The city of Havana, officially called San Cristóbal de Havana, was founded in the year 1519 by the Spanish. The Spanish king granted it the title of city in the year 1592. With its walls and forts, built to protect it against the pirates, today Havana is one of the finest examples of a Spanish colonial city in the Americas. And with more than 500 year of existence, Havana has some of the most diverse styles of architecture in the world, not only the castles built in the late 16th century, but also modernist present-day buildings and anything in between.
Havana can essentially be divided in 4 parts: Havana Vieja, Centro Habana, Vedado, and the newer suburban districts.
