Must-do's |
1. Scuba diving from Marina Gaviota at the Cayerías del Norte
From our experience www.househostelcuba.com can assure you that for those who love water sports, this site is a must go and do on your trip. The centre has a good team of professionals, mind that workers at the Marina Gaviota all have a military profile.
The Cayerías del Norte, hundreds of small keys and 24 offshore diving sites along the province´s Atlantic coast, is a perfect area for scuba diving and snorkeling, deep sea fishing, as well as for exploring the coast by catamaran or swimming with the dolphins. At the marina located next to Villa Las Brujas you can book scuba diving and snorkeling sessions (40.00CUC per immersion), a full fishing equipment (260.00CUC for 4 people) or a catamaran cruise (ranging from 15.00CUC for a 1-hour excursion with snorkeling; 36.00CUC for a half-day catamaran cruise to 49.00CUC for a sunset cruise). To rent a boat for half a day will cost you around 90.00CUC.
Address: next to Villa las Brujas, about 2kms from the airport entrance
2. Have lunch in a Caney restaurant in Isabel de Sagua
At walking distance from Sauga la Grande you´ll find Isabela de Sagua, a small fishing village where there are some Caney restaurants. A Caney is like a cottage with a thatched roof, located in the water. There you can enjoy a spectacular rice with lobster while enjoying the caresses of the wind and the whispers of the sea, and all this for the excellent price of about 4 CUC.
3. Visit the Buenavista Biosphere Reserve
On the same northern coast Villa Clara is home to the Buenavista Biosphere Reserve. The Reserve extends along 300,000 hectares and is located in parts of the Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus and Diego de Avila provinces. The Reserve contains a protected ecosystem that includes a marine part with coral reefs, rocky and sandy beaches, active dune zones, keys and reproductive zones for aquatic birds, while the the terrestrial part is composed of evergreen microphyllous coastal and subcoastal forest, mangrove forest, and matorral.
The site has a high biodiversity of flora and fauna and many endemic (20) and threatened species. The Buenavista Biosphere Reserve has eleven core areas in two National Parks: Caguanes and Santa Maria Key and two Fauna refuges: west of ’Santa Maria‘ Key and ’Las Loras‘ key. These core areas contain extraordinary natural, historical and cultural values with 35 archaeological sites and caves with rural art and wall paintings.
The area as scarcely inhabited, still there are around 25,000 locals living and working inside the reserve, dedicated to pisciculture, fisheries, agriculture, forestry and ecological tourism. Around 7,000 tourists visit the area annually and some of the main activities are hunting, fishing, beach tourism, diving and speleology.
Any activity within the protected area needs authorization, which must be obtained through the Buró de Reserva of Cabatur or Havanatur, both located in the centre of Santa Clara. It is also where you - at the same time - reserve the activity you are interested in.
