Jibacoa |
The most reputed tourist resort is Jibacoa, located to the northeast of Havana. Jibacoa is embedded by impressive limestone terraces overlooking the ocean, giving you a pleasant feeling of privacy. It offers good offshore snorkeling options. As for accommodation: you can either take the all-inclusive resort, stay at one of the camping facilities or other sleeping options such as a casa particular. Puerto Escondido and El Peñón del Fraile are some nearby beaches. These are also protected by a line of hills giving you a sense of privacy. They offer a wonderful marine landscape set against several oil wells, endlessly pumping for the extraction of oil and gas, an increasingly important activity for the economy of Mayabeque.
The beaches on the south coast, Playita de Batabanó, Playa Mayabeque, Playa El Rosario and Playa del Caimito, are characterized by more shallow and somewhat muddy waters. And at the south coast there is the Mayabeque beach where the river Mayabeque flows into the Ocean. Here waters are cold and sometimes the red mangrove vegetation in the river turns its waters reddish. |
