Health
Health care system
Cuba has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. Standards of care and training are excellent, but equipment and drugs are often in short supply. It is therefore recommended to take basic drugs, such as aspirins, anti-diarrheal, balms and plasters, with you.
Prices are equivalent to those for similar services in the USA, though some emergency services are provided free of charge. Prior to any treatment, visitors may need to show proof of ability to pay. Your treatment must be paid in CUC. Keep in mind that the Cuban authorities do not allow you to leave the country while there is an outstanding healthcare bill.
Health – Possible risks
Dengue fever may occur as well as outbreaks of dengue haemorrhagic fever and meningitis, particularly in urban areas such as La Habana and Santiago. Rabies is present. For those at high risk, vaccination should be considered. If bitten, seek medical advice without delay.
Health – Travel insurance
All visitors to Cuba are required to prove they have travel insurance covering medical expenses from approved foreign companies during their period of stay, or they will have to buy it from Cuban vendors on arrival in the country. US travel insurance policies are not accepted.
If you have not arranged it in advance, Asistur will provide coverage, be it at a higher cost than your local insurance company. (Asistur, Prado #208, La Habana Vieja, asistur@asistur.cu)
