Santa Clara |
Santa Clara is the site of the last and decisive battle of the Revolution in December 1958 before Fidel Castro entered La Habana and took over the government. December 1958 Batista, still in power at that moment, had sent military supplies and soldiers to Santiago de Cuba by train for a planned counter attack against the revolutionaries. It never came to that offensive: near Santa Clara the train came to a stop as the revolutionaries had destroyed several bridges. With Che Guevara as their commander the (few) revolutionists took the area surrounding the train and in the morning of 29 December they derailed it. When Batista´s men tried to retreat with the train, the revolutionaries attacked again and within ninety minutes the train was theirs. The city of Santa Clara was taken a few days later.
Today the capital city, Santa Clara, is a shrine to Che Guevara and it shows the esteem in which Che is held. You will find historically significant sites commemorating the heroic acts of Che Guevara, among them the mausoleum containing Che Guevara’s remains, as well as several museums documenting his life. Besides that Santa Clara may not have much to offer, nevertheless it is a pleasant city, full of culture (Santa Clara is home to Cuba´s principal university) and with an interesting night life (in Santa Clara you will not only hear the traditional Cuban music but also Cuban punk and hip hop). There is always something going on: music, theater and dance, and more than in any other place: local stuff, made by Cuba for Cubans.
We recommend that before traveling to this city you make sure to have a room reserved, because it all is rented out already you’ll jave t rely on hotels and in this city a hotel would not be the best choice. So, take a look on www.househostelcuba.com, we have several options for accommodation.
We recommend a one or two-days visit to the city since there are not too many things to see and do except for those listed in our What-to-do section. However, it certainly is worth the visit not only because of the historical value the place has for the Cubans but also because of its geographical surroundings.
In this city you will find all amenities, such as exchange etc.. We are talking about a big city to Cuban standards and as mentioned a city with agreat nightlife, with several places where you can drink and dance in a friendly atmosphere ... |
