Airports
Cuba has 10 international airports. José Martí International Airport, La Habana, is by far the principal gateway, although there are numerous to Varadero (VRA) and Santiago de Cuba (SCU) as well. To a lesser extent, international charter flights from Canada and Europe service Cayo Largo del Sur (CYO), Cienfuegos (CFG), Santa Clara (SNU), Camagüey (CMW), Ciego de Avila (AVI), Holguín (HOG), and Cayo Coco (CCC).
At José Martí International Airport there are 4 terminals. Terminal 2 receives direct charter flights from the USA. All other international flights use Terminal 3.
Be prepared: Immigration and customs clearance can be a slow process with long queues and extensive checks of luggage and papers at José Martí International Airport. The airport is chaotic and everything goes slowly, so patience is recommended. It tends to be considerably more speedy at the other, smaller, international airports.
The airport is safe at night. There is a 24-hour tourist information office. In Terminals 2 and 3 there are exchange facilities (open during banking hours) and a 24-hour bank and ATMs are located in Terminal 3.
To get into La Habana you best take a taxi. Taxis are lined up outside the arrivals hall and the metered fee to the city centre is approx. 20-25 CUC (time: around 20-30 minutes). Despite it being illegal to carry passengers without using the meter, airport taxi drivers may refuse to use them and charge a flat fee. To avoid any misunderstanding: agree the fare first.
Companies such as Taxi Ok (tel: +53 7 877 6666) and Panataxi (tel: +53 7 555 5555) use their own cars and apply different prices. They can be found at the exit of Terminal 3 and can take you anywhere on the island.
www.casa hostal cuba.com operate a 24-hour pick-up service from the airport.’ You can reserve this by using the contact form under “other services “.
Local buses are available, but this means of transport can be difficult because payment is required in Cuban National Pesos (non-convertible pesos). The local buses leave from Terminal 1. You can either take the airport bus or a taxi to go the bus stop.

Internal flights
For internal flights you can fly either Cubana de Aviación or AeroCaribbean . They connect Havana and Varadero with the destination cities of Baracoa and Camagüey, Guantánamo, Holguín, Santiago de Cuba, Las Tunas, Cayo Largo, and Cayo Coco. Only Cubana de Aviación flies to Nueva Gerona (Isla de Juventud).
You better book your flight back home as there is a lot of demand. You can book your flight on the internet (see websites under “How to get there – By air”), but the websites will not always be able to cope with your reservation. If already in Cuba and without internet connection, you can easily book flights from the tour desk in almost any hotel in Cuba.
Tourists pay their flights in CUC. Add some extra costs for taxi fee as practically all airports are situated far away from town. Make sure to bring some warm clothes as flights of both airlines are cold. Also be prepared for some serious delays.
