Sancti Spíritus |
Sancti Spiritus was the fourth village founded by Diego Velázquez in 1514 and the cradle of the guayabera, the smart, pleated, buttoned shirt. It is located at the central part of the island, 350 kms. east of Havana. A colonial city - almost reaching 500 years - disclosing testimonies of a wealthy and artistic past: stained glass windows, fences, and doorknockers.
Destined to come second with Trinidad only 70 kilometres down the road, Sancti Spíritus really should be included in your itinerary, and even more so if you are into authentic Cuban places without the tourist hassle.
When walking down Llano street, now called Antonio Rodríguez, the best representative of a historic city street, you reach the – singular - bridge over the Yayabo River, a National Monument, and a symbol of Sancti Spiritus. Nearby is located the Teatro Principal, opened in 1837. It is considered the oldest theatre of Cuba.
The historical centre is dominated by the Iglesia Mayor, founded in 1680, a jewel of colonial architecture, and a point of reference to locate other places. If you like to defy time, stroll down the streets of this tranquil city and peek –with discretion - inside the houses and you will see, in each and every corner, proof of the colonial past.
